Committee of management
South Port Day Links is a community volunteer based organisation that is overseen by an elected volunteer Committee of Management, which is responsible for the governance, leadership and strategic planning for SPDL in liaison with the SPDL team.
To support the governance of SPDL the Committee of Management has a sub-committee structure in place, the SPDL subcommittees include:

Human Resources Subcommittee

CAROL GORDON
Chair
Carol has had a long career in human resources (HR) management in the agricultural and finance sectors. She is currently privately consulting on a range of HR matters including strategy, change management, performance management, team resourcing and staff training and development.
Born in South Africa, Carol came to Australia in 1970 just after the Westgate Bridge collapse. She completed her Higher School Certificate at Camberwell High School and then went to La Trobe University where she completed a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Zoology.
Carol lives in the City of Port Phillip and besides Chairing the Committee of Management at SPDL, she is also the Deputy Chair of the Community Advisory Group (CAC) at the Alfred Hospital. She participated in the development of the City of Port Phillip 20/20 vision ‘Port Phillip Speaks’: a large community engagement program coordinated by the local council looking at the future needs of the community.
Her position on the Committee of Management and CAC recognises her ongoing interest in the health and wellbeing of the local community. She loves to travel and has recently just returned from trips to Canada, UK, USA and India.
ALEC TARSHIS
Deputy Chair
Alec has 25 years of experience in management, technology, customer experience and healthcare. Originally a lawyer, Alec has worked in Australia, Europe and USA in consulting, technology and digital marketing for a variety of clients and in a variety of industries. He has worked in the implementation of Chronic Disease Management programs and platforms and has had more general experience as a General Manager
at Telstra.
Alex joined the Committee of Management in 2017 and has been Deputy Chair since 2020.
Alec is currently consulting at the University of Melbourne and has also started and now runs an Approved Home Care Provider organisation supporting ageing at home for clients throughout the south eastern suburbs of Melbourne.
PETER WADDELL
Treasurer
Peter is a retired accountant (FCPA) with corporate governance qualifications and a background in private enterprise at executive and board levels. He has a broad range
of governance experience with particular skills in business finance, strategic planning, customer relations and IT management.
Peter joined theCommittee of Managementin 2020 and was appointed Treasurer in November 2020. As a resident of Port Melbourne, he wishes to give back to a local community which has been such a good place to live in for so many years.
DENIS MATHIESON
Committee Member
Denis joined Daylinks as a volunteer driver in 2019 and has recently become a member of the Committee of Management.
With over 50 years’ experience as a director and business owner in the private sector and coupled with his passion for helping others
Denis is well qualified to assist the Daylinks team manage the ongoing business challenges as they plan for continued growth and development in the volunteer support sector.
STEVE MARTIN
Committee Member
Steve was an Army officer for 13 years before moving into the private sector. Over the last 20 years he has worked for consulting companies, banks and software companies in program and project delivery, business development and risk management. He has lived and worked in the USA, Malaysia and Singapore, and has extensive business experience in South East Asia. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree with post-graduate qualifications in military studies, information management and business.
Steve lives in South Melbourne. He started as a volunteer driver with SPDL in 2023 and joined the Committee of Management in early 2024. He is a member of the IT Subcommittee.
TONI FLYNN
Committee Member
Toni is currently a Human Resource Consultant and brings over 10 years executive HR experience in aged care at Signature Care, Homestyle Aged Care, Blue Cross and Sapphire Care. She previously had executive roles with Emprevo, Octopus Hospitality, Epic Energy and Westpac . Toni Flynn holds a Postgraduate Degree in Human Resources Management from Deakin University. She has a robust skill set that includes Workforce Planning, Succession Planning, Employee Engagement, HR Policies, and Remuneration. Toni commenced as a committee member in 2024 and hopes to bring some of her aged care experience to assist SPDL.
MARY KIKAS
Committee Member
Mary is an experienced executive leader with extensive knowledge, and experience
in health, safety, wellbeing, and sustainability. She is highly experienced in the development, implementation, review, and monitoring of risk management and clinical governance frameworks to drive risk mitigation strategies tailored to organisational needs that leverage and improve performance in key result areas. She has
extensive risk management experience across operational and strategic functions.
Mary holds tertiary qualifications in occupational health and safety management, ergonomics/human factors, physiotherapy and health, safety, and environmental management systems auditing. Mary has extensive experience working in aged care, disability (including forensic) and homelessness. Her experience in complex, technical service delivery industries has informed her strong client and stakeholder engagement skills. Mary’s passion includes providing tailored services for older people, and people with a disability to promote independence and reduce the potential for social isolation.
CARLY POCOCK
Committee Member
Carly has worked in the rail industry since 2012 and is currently a Senior Fleet Planner at V/Line Pty Ltd. Complex problem solving and stakeholder management are two of the key skills Carly brings with her to the CoM, as well as previous experience in customer service, communications and marketing.
She started working in social media at a tech start up in Argentina, when it was just emerging as a new field, and has postgraduate studies in Leadership & Management at RMIT as well as an undergraduate degree in Visual Arts from UNISA.
Carly came to SPDL at the end of 2021 as a volunteer dog walker, which she did for a year before spotting a vacancy on the CoM. Here, she is able to make a positive contribution with both her experience as a volunteer and professional work experience. Carly is motivated to help others maintain strong connections to their community and shares the values that are important to SPDL.
MARIO GALANTE
Committee Member
Mario is a civil engineer specialising in project management who is committed to serving the community. He understands the need of the elderly and is proud to volunteer for such a caring and worthy organisation.
Mario has been a Committee of Management member since 2015.
Mario is the COM Secretary, a role he has been in for the last five years.
He is also the chair of the Marketing and Fundraising
sub-Committee with the aim of raising funds and promoting the organisation.
NICK VAN DEN BERG
Committee Member
Originally starting in finance Nick van den Berg has spent the last decade in the technology startup space, and is currently the co-founder and CEO of Fologram, a software company that specialises in augmented reality for the design and construction industry.
A native from WA, Nick has a Bachelor in Economics and enjoys exploring Victoria through outdoor activities.
Nick joined SPDL in 2022 and has a particular interest in helping the organisation ensure it's technology helps it servicing its members.
